Phantasmata

“Phantasmata” is a term of Greek origin that designates familiar things appearing in a foreign form. These are apparitions, revelations, specters, or unsettling mental images that reframe the possibilities of interpreting reality.

The expression is also used in the realm of baroque dance: in the 15th century, it referred to a particular figure consisting of a pause between two movements. It is not about stopping, but about reaching a temporal point of balance from which one can imagine the movements to come through the memory of those already performed. Movement, pause, images, repetitions, apparitions… Here lie the essential materials of an artist of the temporal arts. As in the baroque Phantasmata, the ideal workshop of such an artist is not a place but a “time in balance” within whose duration images are born.
