A Belgian artist whose work draws on the life sciences and new technologies, Michel Cleempoel develops pieces that inhabit a fascinating in-between: neither quite natural nor frankly artificial, his works evoke emerging life forms, digital ecosystems governed by their own rules. “Bestioles” stages small virtual beings whose behaviour seems governed by primitive instincts — movement, gathering, dispersal. These tiny creatures inhabit the screen with an unsettling presence, recalling micro-organisms observed under the microscope as much as the automata of behavioural robotics.

“Nébuleuses 4”, for its part, explores the dynamics of constantly evolving particle clouds. The work summons the infinitely large — cosmic nebulae — to question the processes of formation and transformation at work in the universe. Presented as limited-edition DVDs, these pieces also reflect on the distribution and collecting of digital art, raising the question of what it means to own a work whose essence is perpetual motion.

Exhibition presenting the digital installations and video works of Michel Cleempoel at Galerie Charlot in Paris. The exhibition highlights generative digital art, including pieces entitled “Bestioles” and “Nébuleuses 4”, presented as limited-edition DVDs.
