Painting · Indian ink · Works on paper
After a childhood and adolescence spent in Lebanon, Thailand, Cyprus and then England, Bénédicte Gerin settled in France in 1982 and studied graphic arts. Her encounter with calligraphy in 1991 proved decisive: she trained with several calligraphers and made the letter her first field of exploration.
Little by little, the letter came undone. Her work shifted from calligraphy towards a more pared-back painting, in which only signs close to the word, cadences and breaths remain. Working in acrylic and Indian ink on paper, she composes both small, highly intense formats and vast surfaces where the gesture unfolds freely. Galerie Charlot devoted two solo exhibitions to her, in 2012 and 2014, and presented her work in the group exhibition MIXED MEDIA in 2013.
