Nicolas Sassoon uses animation techniques derived from early computer graphics: pixelated forms, limited colour palettes and moiré effects. From them he creates landscapes, architectures and natural forces — water, waterfalls, atmospheres — that oscillate between depth and flatness.
His work explores the optical, sculptural and contemplative qualities of the screen image, across animations, video sculptures, engravings and monumental projections adapted to architecture. He readily collaborates with architects, electronic musicians and textile designers, and co-founded the collective projects SIGNALS (with Rick Silva) and WALLPAPERS.
He has exhibited at the Whitney Museum (Dreamlands, 2016), the New Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, ZKM, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Centre Pompidou (Hors Pistes, 2021) and the West Bund Art Museum in Shanghai. Galerie Charlot devoted the solo exhibition SUBTERRANEA to him in 2020.
