Having arrived in Paris at the age of four, Pontus Carle trained in printmaking at the Académie Goetz, then in lithography and painting at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, before living in New York from 1980 to 1989, where he began to exhibit. Since 1991, he has divided his life between Paris and Berlin and exhibits regularly in Europe and the United States.
His canvases at first appear chaotic: matter and colour, gathered at the centre, are destroyed and then partially rebuilt, allowing a wheel, a ladder or a silhouette to surface before dissolving again. The critic Henri-François Debailleux sees in them the capture of fleeting moments of transformation.
More recently, the artist has adopted hinged wooden shutters as his support, treated like open books, in which collage, writing, painting and sculpted elements combine to tell the inner and imaginary life of a house. A long-standing artist of Galerie Charlot, he exhibited there several times between 2010 and 2016, including the group exhibition MIXED MEDIA in 2013.
