Interactive installation · Video · Performance · Generative art · NFT · Augmented reality
Initially trained in sociology before moving into theatre as an actor and stage designer, Thomas Israël turned to multimedia art with a resolutely transdisciplinary approach. His work addresses social and humanist themes: the body and its finitude, the passage of time and the murky zones of the unconscious.
Video installations, interactive devices such as Peeping Tom, autonomous lightboxes, body-mapping performances such as Skinstrap, awarded at the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2013, and generative works and NFTs: each project invents a physical, intimate relationship between the viewer and the image. He has also designed video environments for opera in Bordeaux, Tokyo and South Korea.
His work has been shown at MoMA, the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille, Les Abattoirs in Toulouse, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and SESC in Brazil. At Galerie Charlot, he has notably presented À LA LISIÈRE DU BOIS (2012) and EXILT (2016), and taken part in DATA DATING and DIGITAL ART WAVES. His monograph Memento Body was published by La Lettre volée.
