Light installation · Optical and kinetic art · Video · Holography
A graduate of the Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg, Flavien Théry first pursued a career in design before devoting himself to an artistic practice on the border between art and science. Heir to optical and kinetic art, he harnesses the resources of new media – screens, polarising filters, holography, video – to explore the nature of light and the mechanisms of perception.
His works play on the visible and the invisible, the material and the spiritual. Galerie Charlot has devoted the solo exhibitions LE BLANC N’EXISTE PAS (2015) and ICI COMMENCENT LES CIEUX (2017) to him, and presented his work at VOLTA Basel and at the opening of its Tel Aviv space (THE ARTSIDE OF ALGORITHMS, 2017). He regularly collaborates with the scientist Fred Murie, notably on LE RAYON EXTRA-ORDINAIRE at Les Champs Libres in Rennes (2022–2023), which grew out of a residency with the FOTON Institute. His work has been shown at DAM Gallery in Berlin, which represents him, the Fondation Vasarely, Galerie Denise René, Casino Luxembourg and the Saint-Étienne International Design Biennial.
